Yoga is Unity/Equity/Justice

Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equitable economic, political and social rights and opportunities.

And if we view yoga as unity, then yoga is about social justice. It is the work of empowering our bodies, minds, spirits and voices so we may advocate for ourselves and others. For me, it is elevating the voices of queer, trans, black, indigenous, and all people of color. It is the work of sharing my power by re-allocating the resources I  hold as a result of my privileges with the people who need it the most in my community.

We practice Yoga to access our higher self. To deepen into a more honest, authentic and liberated relationship with ourselves because we understand that our liberation is bound to the liberation of all people.

Through the rich and varied yogic principles, may we learn to ease the suffering in ourselves, so that we may help ease the suffering of others.

Concepts such as: Svadhyaya (Self Study), Ishvara Pranidhana (Surrender to something greater than ourselves), the Yamas (ethical practices-the way we treat others), Niyamas (how we treat ourselves, the original self-care practices) are  excellent places to begin a lifelong journey of recognizing my inherent biases and inherited beliefs, and dismantling those that cause harm others and to myself.

When we are willing and open-to see the world as it truly is- when we are able to confront and reduce our own suffering, we can orient our observance to the suffering of others and open our hearts with empathy and action to do our part in dismantling systems of oppression and institutionalized racism for stronger, more unified and peaceful communities.
